The conception of sustainable and healthy architecture in high and dense urban settings is a primary global challenge. However, architects and engineers struggle with the complexity of urban physics and with an increasing amount of inconsistent environmental data and constraints. To tackle these issues, we are developing a site-analysis and conceptual-design software that provides site-specific design suggestions related to sun, airflow, views, and noise, that are all key factors for healthy and sustainable architecture. This technology relies on high-resolution 3D geodata, generated through aircraft and satellite measurements, that contains accurate information on the shape of terrain, buildings, and vegetation. This data is then fused and processed with several innovative simulation methods to create results that are made available in a highly interactive visualization framework.

This project relies on past research work conducted at the ETH Zürich with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. In a later innovation phase, from 2021 to 2023, Archimethod has developed a comprehensive desk-version of the software applying it with very positive results to the first real-world projects. Currently we are developing the new, user-ready, web-version of the software. This development process is based on the combination of technologies and know-how in environmental-analysis and sustainable-design of Archimethod, with the web-cloud and 3D graphics expertise of SUPSI, and with geodata and knowledge from the European Space Agency. The software-features related to the filtering, combination, and transformation of environmental data via a graphical user interface are protected by two international pending patents.
